img_1278Sunday 21 May 2006        As part of the RCIA 15 graduates' going-away project, an outreach programme was arranged to visit the Bukit Nanas Convent today. Nestled against the Bukit Nanas forest reserve, the Bukit Nanas Convent is within stone's throw from a famous KL landmark, the KL Tower. Standing within the compound of the convent, one only needs to look up to see the majestic tower. And in the courtyard, there is a 105-year old well which is still in good working condition. You might be tempted to crank the handle to bring up some water with a bucket but the sisters prefer using an electric pump in this day and age.

What is so special about this convent, you might ask. In 1911, a group of nuns from the Infant Jesus Sisters moved into these premises. The following year, an orphanage was established by the sisters. During the years that followed, thousands of orphans were sent to the convent and most were adopted. However, like all good things that must come to an end, the convent ceased taking in orphans in the 1960s.

However, not all the orphans were lucky enough to be adopted. Some of them were born handicapped, thus making their adoption difficult. In the end, those that remained became permanent residents at the convent. Unable to care for themselves properly, the orphanage is the best place for them and now, forty years on, they are all senior citizens. The only 'family members' that come to visit them are the former residents who come back during festive season like Christmas.

So, the very enthusiastic RCIA 15 members planned a session for the residents; musical chair, hokey pokey dance, some games and finally tea was on the itinerary. After it all ended, I was told that they are an energetic bunch. Some of us younger folks had a hard time keeping up with them.

The orphanage, or more appropriately called a home now that itsimg_1274 residents are elderly, is semi-aided by the government. However, money cannot buy the love and caring that these residents need. It is clear that they enjoy the company of visitors.

So, if you would like to visit them, the orphanage is located in the Bukit Nanas Convent. You may contact Sister Stephanie of the Infant Jesus Convent at telephone number 03-2078 0736.
